1984

Journal: 10/5,

This writing assignment is a creative writing assignment designed to encourage you to think more deeply about the world inside the novel 1984.  At the beginning of the novel, Winston begins keeping a diary, and it becomes an important symbol of his ability to think for himself.

For this assignment, you will write 4 diary entries, each a minimum of ½ page.  These do not need to be typed, although you are free to do so if you choose.  You may choose who you are in this futuristic society and write accordingly.  Think about things like: Who are you?  Are you a prole? An Outer Party member like Winston and Julia?  An inner party member like O’Brien?  Then think about the details the book has given about the lives of these different individuals.  What privileges or lack of them go with your station?  If you are a party member, are you rebellious like Winston and Julia or are you orthodox like Parsons?  Are you a child or a grown up?

The book has given many details and events you can include, but ultimately it is up to you what events you want to write about.  You may choose to make-up events or write in detail about events which are only mentioned in passing in the book; however, your diaries must agree with information in the book.  For example, you would not be a party member without a telescreen, or a prole who gets to drink coffee and relax all day.  The details you write about must be believable based on what we know about this society.  I expect them to be very creative, detailed and well-written.  Choose your ideas and your words carefully.
